This is all real. I’m not making this up. In fact, I videoed as much as I could in hopes that someone back home would believe any of it. From the beginning, our purpose was to promote human rights education for kids; but for me, the true degree to which human rights are abused on this planet was only beginning to sink in.

Of course, this just made our purpose more urgent.

We didn’t stop. We met with schools, government officials, and even the Deputy Inspector General of Police. We pressed on through Zambia, South Africa, Ghana, and even Venezuela during the height of its most violent civil uprising in years. The more we saw, the harder we strove. It was like a snowball.

I realized that the only reason I had hoped for danger was because I had felt so safe. The country in which I live, though not perfect in any sense, is light years ahead of most. But more than that, it is an isolated haven where it’s possible to relax.

Philip K. Dick once said, “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.”
